Being a Ghost has a Certain Appeal

jansmatters.com, October 28, 2024

Perhaps it is

appearing briefly as a shimmer at the end of a stranger’s hall at night or

moving items just as the person turns away and back to a shelf they are organizing or

triggering shivers down the spines of a group of teens in the park playing with a Ouija board.

Perhaps it is

frightening little children to discourage them from wandering into the forest at sunset or

breathing softly into the ear of an infant to see his eyes widen, and a smile appear on his little face or

breezing through a group of ghost busters in a cemetery late at night giving them the thrill they seek.

Perhaps it is

standing guard over young ones who sleep on the streets, frightening off potential abusers or

listening to the music of a playground and to mumbled conversations at tables under umbrellas on a city sidewalk or

walking the halls at an old folk’s home, seeking souls in need of a helpful hand into my realm.

Perhaps it is

bringing solace to other ghostly spirits lost and afraid or

whispering sweet nothings into the dreams of my loved ones or

frightening my past enemies by appearing at the foot of their bed just before they fall asleep.

Perhaps it is

flying freely far above all earth-bound living creatures or

grasping the beauty, oneness and shared spirit of all things in this universe or

coming to rest, at last, when my ghostly duties are complete.
